  • The Rexel Foundation at the heart of social entrepreneurship

The Rexel Foundation for a better energy future was a supporting partner of the Student Social Entrepreneurship Competition on March 5, 2015 at the ESSEC Business School.

This 8th edition was organized by ESSEC Business School and featured two prestigious contests on the topic of innovation and social entrepreneurship: the French-speaking portion of the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC), whose winners would go on to the social business plan competition at the University of California, Berkeley on April 10, 2015, and the ESSEC competition, which rewards more local social initiatives.

Over the course of a day filled with ideas, interaction and dynamism, the projects presented by the finalists of the GSCV (11 of the 140 candidates) and the ESSEC competition (10 of the 140 candidates) were judged based on the criteria of economic viability, social and environmental impact, developmental ambition, and feasibility.

Congratulations to the three candidates chosen at the GSCV: Ecoco (ecological coffering), Y Generation (quality vocational education and personalized coaching to help underprivileged youth in developing countries to find employment), and GOLD  of Bengal (which promotes the use of technical jute reinforcements for composite applications), who went on to defend their projects at Berkeley a few days later.

At the ESSEC competition, the winners of the 2015 edition were the projects Biophyto Collines (1st place) and Sen Women Up (2nd place).

This event also provided the opportunity to present the very first Rexel Foundation award in recognition of energy-related social initiatives. A special mention goes to the GSVC finalist, the Solar Smile team, who received the Foundation’s award. Their dental kit, a veritable mobile dental office powered by solar batteries, provides access to dental care for communities living in remote rural regions.

  • Rexel Foundation for a better energy future was awarded the "Very Favorite Trophy for a Foundation" by Trophées Défis RSE 2015

The awards ceremony Trophées Défis RSE has awarded the two-year Rexel Foundation for its dynamism, already supporting 29 initiatives in 13 countries with more than 40 partners as well as the innovative model of its Platform in support of social entrepreneurs

The “Défis RSE” (CSR Challenges) are organized with the support of companies committed to CSR, which form the jury selecting the best CSR initiatives, those who have demonstrated responsibility in the commitments, performance , sustainability and daring.

Among the key initiatives is a joint skills platform in support of social entrepreneurs, which is a laboratory of initiatives, an incubator of innovative models that benefit most vulnerable populations or "BOP" (Base of the Pyramid). It connects the numerous players involved in energy progress:

    • social entrepreneurs, leading projects with an aim to improve access to energy and fight against fuel poverty
    • Rexel partners: suppliers, service companies, associations or organizations
    • Rexel employees who put their skills to the projects.

Today, the platform hosts social entrepreneurs of different nationalities who are supported in various forms: skills sponsorship, donation of equipment, financial, transport and logistics support, or knowledge sharing tools. It has already trained more than 500 experts and professionals and pursues its international development as a priority.

The Rexel Foundation was awarded alongside eight other winners from 37 nominated companies or organizations.
