The Rexel Foundation provided funding for a research project to improve understanding of the barriers to the energy efficient building renovation (EEBR) of Dutch housing stock.

The research findings have been published in a report authored by Robert Harmsen, Senior Researcher in Energy & Resources, and Alco Kieft, Researcher in Innovation Systems, from the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, which seeks to:

1) identify the main barriers for EEBR in the Netherlands today,
2) map existing activities and related policies that try to stimulate EEBR in the Netherlands so that trends in renovation approaches can be identified,
3) understand what kind of opportunities and threats these trends in renovation approaches provide from the viewpoint of installers and finally,
4) provide ideas for how installers can improve their position in the renovation market in the near and mid-term future.

With this report, titled ‘Changing times in the Dutch renovation sector’, the researchers intend to inform public discussions in order to help move European policy forward.
